*How Does The New Coronavirus Attacks Human Body

Although the infected cells will send a warning to the immune system, trying to let it neutralize or eliminate pathogens, the virus can stop or intercept this warning, so that it has sufficient time to replicate before people starts showing symptoms.

*Which Cells Are Most Vulnerable to The New Coronavirus?

According to the research report that’s published in CELL magazine by the research team formed by MIT and Harvard University, the three most likely to be directly attacked by SARs-CoV-2 cells in the respiratory system and intestinal system, that has both ACE2 and TMPRSS2 cell types, including:

  1. Goblet secretory cells and ciliated cells in the nasal cavity responsible for the secretion of nasal mucus.
  2. Type II pneumocytes in the lungs responsible for maintaining alveolar function.
  3. Absorptive enterocytes located on the small intestine and responsible for managing nutrient absorption.

The above research used the single-cell RNA sequencing method to perform massive analysis of approximately 20,000 genes in human cells to find cells that express both ACE2 and TMPRSS2.

After the goblet secretory cells and ciliated cells in the nasal cavity are invaded, the virus will be replicated in large numbers, and there will be almost no symptoms within a week.

As the virus continues to replicate during this week, the infected person may spread a large number of viruses, and the symptoms can be just fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache or muscle pain. The second type of alveolar cells in the lungs are invaded, usually because the immune system of the infected person fails to fight the new coronavirus in the initial stage, causing the virus to travel along the trachea through the bronchus to the alveoli that’s rich in ACE2 receptor protein.

Type Ⅱ alveolar cell, also known as septal cell, can secrete surfactant, and the function of this compound is to prevent alveolar collapse, also to increase secretion during deep breathing, increase lung compliance and make lung expand easier. If the virus invades the type Ⅱ alveolar cells and cause the death of a large number of alveolar cells, but does not cause the immune system to respond, usually the symptoms are just poor compliance of the lungs. Before the patient finds out the abnormality, the virus can still proliferate in large numbers, and the patient can infect the surrounding area. 

Even if the immune system is activated and begins to fight the virus at this time, it will produce a large amount of dead cells and mucus, which will destroy the blood oxygen exchange mechanism, and cause symptoms such as respiratory distress, severe cough and fever, and soon the patient will quickly enter a severe stage of infection. After the absorptive intestinal epithelial cells are invaded, it will cause various intestinal pathological symptoms. The new coronavirus has affected the micro-ecological environment of the human intestine, including constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and various symptoms of impaired intestinal mucosal immune protection. The virus can also be spread through urine, feces, etc.

In addition to the above three cells that are susceptible to the invasion of the new coronavirus, there are other research units that have successively found cells with ACE2 receptors in the eyes, brain, nasal nerves, kidney, cardiovascular, and liver, and confirmed these cells have been attacked by the new coronavirus under the conditions of this epidemic. The symptoms include loss of the sense of smell and taste, conjunctivitis, epilepsy, brain inflammation, kidney metabolism problems, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), myocardial damage, and elevated GPT/GOT liver index.
